COD FISH PASTELS: A DELICACY THAT THE PORTUGUESE LOVE

In any Portuguese house, cod fish cakes are very good on the table. Discover the history and the original recipe of this fabulous delicacy.

«Cod fish pastels» in the South; «Cod fish cakes» in the North, since the beginning of the 20th century, this delicacy has been mandatory in Portuguese recipes.

Made in Portugal and abroad, its origin is not certain, with names and prestigious works such as that of Maria de Lourdes Modesto, at the top, which point to Minho as the birthplace of this snack.

Regardless of the source, what is certain is that this is a snack that is still enjoyed by everyone today and with all its variations of confection it is the delight of the Portuguese who do not dispense it accompanied by rice with greens, beans or, simply, as a snack .

The first recipe of this delicacy, officially registered, dates back to 1904 and can be found in the “Treaty of Cuisine and Cup”, by Carlos Bandeira Melo (official of the Portuguese army), with the title “Codfish in puffed cakes”.
